A small town in Guantanamo province where Melba and her husband Arturo had been assigned had a reputation for involvement with Santeria, a Cuban religion which has its roots in demonic oppression. They were increasingly experiencing some serious opposition as the church plant in which they were working began to grow after they had spent some concerted time in fasting and praying for God’s spirit to overcome the powers of darkness. On one occasion after the townspeople had begun to recognize what a different message they had one of the women came after Melba in a fit of rage. As she approached the pastor's wife with machetes in both hands and vile threats flowing from her mouth to kill her Melba could only fall to her knees to call on God for protection; there was no place to even run and hide. When the woman threw the machetes at her body they amazingly deflected off an invisible barrier and Melba’s life was spared. The victory against the powers of darkness will always be in the Lord's hands!
